General Information on Ilia
The city of Pyrgos is located approximately 100km southwest of the city of Patras. It is the capital and the largest city of the prefecture of Ilia. Pyrgos is the trading and communication centre of the prefecture, as all public transport passes through here. The port of Kyllini nearby is a gate to the Ionian islands.
Pyrgos has many luxury hotels and restaurants, and some very interesting buildings with impressive architecture, such as the Municipal Theatre and the Municipal Market, both designed by German architect Chiller.
How to Reach Ilia
Bus: From the Pyrgos Bus Station there are several buses daily connecting the city to Olympia (30 minutes), Athens (6½ hours), Patras (2 hours), Kyllini (50 minutes), Kyparissia (1¼ hours), Tripolis (3½ hours), Kalamata (2 hours) and Andritsena (1½ hours). There are also frequent connections to other cities, such as Thessaloniki and Ioannina.
Train: There are a few train connections between Pyrgos and Olympia.
Weather in Ilia
The Peloponnese Peninsula has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Rainfalls occur mostly between October and March.
