Ancient Greek Dictionary

Ancient Greek Dictionary There are a few sites offering online dictionaries of Ancient Greek. However, one of the published dictionaries from Ancient Greek to English is “A Greek – English Lexicon”, a standard lexicographical work of the Ancient Greek language.

The dictionary started being written in the 19th century and has now reached its 9th edition. It was based on another work by the German lexicographer Franz Passow, called “Handworterbuch der griechischen Sprache”, published in 1819 for the first time. “A Greek – English Lexicon” was later edited by Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, Henry Stuart Jones and Roderick McKenzie, and was published by the Oxford University Press; since then, it has also been referred to as Liddell & Scott, Liddell – Scott – Jones, or LSJ. The first editor of the LSJ, Henry George Liddell, was the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford and father of Alice Liddell, the well – known Alice in the work of Lewis Carroll.

The ninth edition was published in 1940, and since then a Supplement has been created, marking necessary changes in the original book. The most recent edition of the Supplement, published in 1996, contains 320 pages of corrections to the main text and other material.
