Greek Mythology Movies

Greek Mythology Movies As Greek mythology is rich in adventures, heroic feats and a plethora of other stories, it comes as no surprise that numerous movies drew inspiration from it.

Probably the oldest movie with a theme deriving from Greek mythology is Odissea in 1911. Several more followed that dealt with the Trojan War and the adventures of Odysseus on his return home, i.e. were based on the Homeric Epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. More recent movies include “Helen of Troy”, and “Troy”.

Films related to Jason and the Argonautic Expedition include “Jason and the Argonauts” and “The Spirit”, which features the Golden Fleece and the blood of Heracles. Heracles has also appeared in numerous movies and TV series, although loosely based on the original mythical character, including “Hercules and the Amazon Women”, “Hercules and the Circle of Fire”, “Hercules and the Lost Kingdom”, as well as the TV series “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”. The commercial success of the TV series also caused the creation of a spinoff called “Xena: Warrior Princess”, sometimes stories and characters of the two TV series intertwined.

Perseus, the demigod who killed the Gorgon Medusa, has also been the inspiration of various movies. Among them are “Perseo l’invincibile”, “Clash of the Titans”, “Wrath of the Titans”, “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”, and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters”.

On the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur are based the movies “Minotaur”, “The Hunger Games” and the “Immortals”. Other movies related to Greek mythology in general include “Pygmalion”, “My Fair Lady”, “Mighty Aphrodite”, and “Orpheus”.
