Villa Brimston Location
All over the island, Rhodes has noteworthy historic sights as well as stunning beaches. Covering roughly 90km from north to south, Rhodes is one of the largest of the Greek islands. Afantou’s central location on the eastern coast puts most parts of the island within an hour’s drive. The capital city, Rhodes, is known for its impressive Old Town, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Look out for the Street of the Knights, the Roloi Clock Tower and the Palace of the Grand Masters. This former fortress and citadel is partly open to the public and is perhaps Rhodes’ best-known attraction. It also houses the city’s Archaeological Museum. The pedestrianised Old Town’s labyrinth of streets, some of them nameless, make Rhodes an interesting place to get lost in.
Down the coast, Faliraki offers family fun, with a well-organised beach, water-parks and a go-karting track. At the other end of the scale, Kallithea Springs, between Rhodes Town and Faliraki, is a popular waterfront spa which offers a serene setting in which to relax.
Many people visit Rhodes just for the beaches, and there are so many to try. The east coast has a great range, with several around ever-popular Lindos, as well as Afantou, Archangelos, Agathi and Tsampika, a highly rated sandy beach. Surfers head down south for the stunning Prasonisi, while the north has Ialyssos, Ixia and Rhodes Town’s Elli Beach. Down the (often quieter) west coast, you have Limni, Soroni and Kameiros – and these just scratch the surface of the island’s beach offering.
Other notable sights around the island include the Lindos Acropolis, the ancient ruins of which are situated on a clifftop and offer spectacular views of the Mediterranean, and the ancient city of Kameiros. The Valley of the Butterflies is a charming area of natural beauty which fills with butterflies in summer. If you like that, you may also like the Epta Piges (Seven Springs). This calming area of countryside features seven magnificent waterfalls and a lake to swim in.
If you like to hike, head west to Koufos Canyon, with its impressive rock formations. The canyon is about 25 minutes’ drive from the ruins of Kritinia Castle, which provides a stunning sea view. Another place to find peace and tranquility is the Gadoura Dam – perfect for a quiet walk around the lake – or you could head for one of Rhodes’ many monasteries. One of the best known, the fascinating Filerimos Monastery, lies around 15 minutes’ drive from Rhodes Town.
